Google vs. Yahoo SEO: Which Works Better?

By Tony Alverio

Two of the leading search engines today are Google and Yahoo, and both of them use SEO techniques in order to outrank each other. Of course some people are fans of Google, while others prefer Yahoo when doing search queries. But which search engine does a better, more credible job when it comes to giving users the answers to their searches?

There are actually four categories in which you can rank the performance of Google and Yahoo when it comes to search engine optimization. Based on user and expert reviews, here is how both search engines do at present:

Quality of results

When it comes to displaying high quality search results, neither Google nor Yahoo does a great job. Unless the searches become more specific, both engines relatively show off the same results. There are also times when some of the great websites rank in the top 20-50 pages after doing a search query, despite being popular among actual users. There are no problems with the marketing and promotional techniques of these sites, thus both search engines need to have their website stats fixed to help push those better sites up to the top page rankings. Also, despite imposing rules against black hat SEO, you can still track down spam-filled sites on their top 10 lists.

Links

In the aspect of links and positioning meanwhile, Yahoo does a better job than Google particularly for sites with lower IBLs. You can rely more on Yahoo when searching for more specific queries, while you can work better with Google when it comes to broader subjects. It is also evident that both engines take in some sites into their top 10 lists despite having low number of bank links. The website stats of both search engines seem to follow the same categorical guidelines, and somehow provide relatively same results. Because of this loophole, SEO experts can work their way to the top without using the usual optimization mechanics, and hence develop new ideas to boost the page rank of their sites.

Site Age

Both Google and Yahoo prefer older websites as these tend to be more established in their chosen niches, but in this case Google has more restrictions in this aspect. Google only allows 2/40 top sites in the first 10 rankings to be newer than 2002, while Yahoo allows 5/40. There’s no prejudice against newer sites though; they still can rise to the top given the techniques that they use.

Anchor text results

Anchor text no longer provides much positive contributions when it comes to page rankings, but since they help in increasing the functionality and link building attributes of websites, both Google and Yahoo still consider them as a supportive factor when rising to the top of page ranks. Google does require other factors to complete an analysis of website stats, unlike Yahoo, which seems to have a simpler form of computation of a site’s ranking.

Given this information, you can now determine which SEO techniques you can use to effectively rise to the page rankings of Google and Yahoo. You can then apply these information when doing your optimization and marketing activities to boost traffic and popularity to your site.
